Octogenarian cop keeps young officers in shape

At 85 years old, this hulking Hialeah police officer is the oldest on record in Florida.

At 85-years old, Hialeah Police Officer Leo Thalassites is the oldest active cop on record in Florida.

SPECIAL TO THE MIAMI HERALD

When a mugger shoved a .357 into Leo Thalassites’ ribs at a Miami parking lot last summer, he got more than a wallet. He got a beatdown.

“He thought I was soft,” said Thalassites, a Hialeah police officer, who, at 85, is the state’s oldest active officer.

Thalassites calmly recalled the night near Southwest Eighth Street when he cracked ribs, knocked out teeth and fractured the skull of a would-be mugger with his bare hands.

When the 6-foot-2, 250-pound thug woke, his blurry vision focused on Thalassites, who was looking down at him, with eyes closed, praying softly in Greek.

“I forgive you,” said Thalassites, before the startled man darted through an alley and called police for his own protection.

Thalassites commutes three times a week to Hialeah from his home in Palm Harbor, near Tampa. He hires a driver for the more than 3-hour commute. His job is to work in the gym to get officers in shape.

The FDLE could not identify another officer who has served at age 85 or older.

“He is still a certified police officer and he has active employment,” said Heather Smith, an official with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

His father, George Thalassites, was a seventh-generation priest who served Miami’s Greek community in the 1940s. He also taught combat fighting to elite Greek soldiers.

The younger Thalassites couldn’t learn to write Greek well enough to be a priest, so his father gave him two life lessons:

• Put “Jesus first” before anything else in life.

• Take care of your body.

He shuns fatty foods and hasn’t had a soda in more than 60 years. He eats measured portions of chicken and vegetables and drinks only water.

“My body is the temple of God,” he said.

On the rare occasion he goes to a restaurant, he chats with the cook.

“I talk to him, see?” said Thalassites, in a thick New England-accent. “I have him show me his hands then I tell him I want it cooked right. Understand?”

Each day at 4 a.m., he springs out of bed to pray, run a few miles, lift weights and punch a heavy bag.

Thalassites, a Marine Corps fight club champion in the 1940s, insists that teaching discipline can save lives.

He joined the Dade County Police Department in 1956, then transferred to Hialeah in 1963 where he was promoted to sergeant and taught defensive tactics.

He has taught self-defense to thousands of officers during his 54-year police career.

Thalassites has trained boxers like Hector “Macho” Camacho, “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran.

In 1999, former Hialeah Police Chief Rolando Bolanos and the department honored Thalassites by naming the police gym after him.

The biggest threat to public safety today, according to Thalassites, is out-of-shape cops who are not serious about training.

“Leo inspires confidence in younger officers,” Bolanos said. “He can overpower any man I have ever met.”

7 Priceless Works of Art Ruined by Staggering Acts of Idiocy

By Robin O'Lachlan Sep 30, 2010
article image

War, natural disaster, incinerating a painting because it's haunted by Vigo the Carpathian--there are all sorts of regrettable, but perfectly legitimate, reasons valuable art has been lost to the world. But sometimes there is no good reason. Sometimes we just screw up. Sometimes we do something silly, something like this...

Bad Plaster Ruins The Last Supper

When you think of the last supper, you probably only have one image in mind: Jesus sitting calmly at the center of the table while everyone else clambers around as if they've all misplaced their contacts. That image right there is Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper, perhaps his most well known masterpiece next to the Mona Lisa.

Apparently, "forgetting to give her eyebrows" was not considered a major blunder at the time...

So What Happened?

The painting is so well known, you might not be surprised to learn that it crossed paths with two of history's most famous figures. But, you probably didn't know that both figures went out of their way to treat it like it had been pooped up there by someone with a remarkably imprecise and explosive strain of diarrhea.

The first noted figure was Leonardo himself. See, frescoes are supposed to be painted on wet plaster or they start to peel. Unless you want your fresco to have the shelf life of a Banksy painting, the wet plaster is as important to the equation as the paint. But this wasn't any painter, he was Leonardo motherfucking da Vinci and if he wanted to paint on a dry surface, who's going to stop him? Unsurprisingly, the whole thing turned to a horrible peeling mess within his own lifetime.

By 1652, it was considered ruined and unrecognizable. This may explain why someone decided later to knock a hole right through the base of Jesus to make room for a door.

Just so we're clear how much of a mess this was, this is the 15th century Catholic Italy we're talking about. Jesus was sort of a big deal over there.

Then Napoleon, a great lover of art and anything Leonardo, came along and decided it was shit. When his troops were stationed in Italy, he decided to turn the whole room into a storage closet. Then, because he wasn't quite finished dragging his ass all over Leonardo's second greatest work, he decided to turn it into a prison.

By 1826, after a number of attempts to fix it, an attempt was made to move it to a safer location. Unfortunately, they commissioned a man who specialized in moving frescos to move The Last Supper. That'd be great if it was actually a fresco. His techniques ended up damaging the painting, and he quickly tried to glue the whole thing back together, which only added to the damage.

Clearly, The Last Supper. Or an out of focus photo of some laundry. We're not sure.

Monet Destroys His Own Lilies

Monet was known to be one of the founders of the impressionist art movement and his lily paintings essentially kick-started a radical art community that was widely misunderstood in it's time. Of course now he is recognized as a genius, kind of like how generations from now the world may finally understand what Fred Durst was trying to tell us.

Maybe.

So What Happened?

Monet had cataracts. While nobody can say for sure if the condition was responsible for the blurred look that initially made his paintings so influential, we do know that as his condition worsened with age, his paintings became blurrier. And since cataracts affect your ability to perceive color, what began as paintings of green lilies...

...became lilies tinged slightly pink and brown and then, eventually, red lilies.

Eh, close enough for government work.

The art world assumed he was intentionally using the wrong colors and blurring images more than ever. If anything, this later work encouraged other impressionist painters to take more risks with colors and style. Everything Monet produced, including his red lilies, was considered invaluable, and would still be considered invaluable today... if Monet didn't go on his crazy lily destroying rampage.

His mighty beard hungered for fine art.

After Monet got corrective surgery on his eyes, a 1920s procedure that probably consisted of a rusty scalpel and a bottle of scotch, he actually started seeing things more clearly. When he saw that he'd been painting red lilies for all these years, even though they'd been partially responsible for his fame and critical acclaim, he decided to destroy them all. The only reason we know what some of these looked like is because friends and family saved some from Monet's wrath.

Several LS Lowry Drawings Get Trashed

You don't have to appreciate his artwork to appreciate the insane amount of money LS Lowry's drawings, even his sketches, would get at an auction today. It's predicted today that even his most half-assed, coffee stained, possibly even suspiciously stained, sketches could fetch a tidy sum of one million pounds, which, by our own measurements, is like a shitload of American dollars.

Or $12, depending on if they turn it into one of those folk art calendars or not.

So What Happened?

He was giving them out as tips to his local milkman. The milkman, thinking they looked like garbage, immediately scrunched them up and threw them into the trash. Which is exactly how you should behave when someone is just trying to share their art with the world. Please, if this article isn't up to your standards, feel free to print this page off, spit on it, rub it into the mud and then burn it in a trashcan.

That'll teach you to art.

Ben Timperly, the milkman, only found out later how big a deal Lowry was. While sitting in a doctor's office, he noticed a drawing on the wall of the waiting room which looked surprisingly similar to that one he threw out so he could finish a minimum wage-paying job. We're guessing he destroyed that one as well.

According to Timperly: "I just thought my children could paint better than him." He then said Mt. Rushmore "looked like something my dog threw up" and dismissed the entire history of human achievement by saying, "Eh, I could do better."

What is this shit?

Statues Everywhere Are Losing Their Dongs

In ancient Greece, Rome and essentially all of Europe way up till the 1500s, public nudity was just a fact of life. A dirty, sexy fact of life. So if nudity was so great to these guys, why are so many of these statues missing their most valuable parts? Why are there fig leaves on their crotches, a fashion choice that defies both logic and physics?

So What Happened?

You can thank 16th century sensibilities and the Catholic Church. In ancient Rome, Greece, and even right up to the Renaissance, artists liked to show off their work to its full extent. After several centuries of just letting them flop on out there in the open for the whole world to see, a few popes launched the whole Dick Crusade, which is totally what it should have been called.

Dan Brown, for instance, claims the whole thing started in the 19th century when Pope Pius IX whacked off (figuratively speaking) a bunch of stone dicks so they would not corrupt the minds of the citizens. While we can't vouch for what Dan Brown calls "historical accuracy," nor can we vouch for what Pius was up to in his spare time, the whole dick thing started much, much, earlier.

In an effort to keep up with the Protestant Reformation's sense of piousness during the 1500s, the Catholic Church decided to ban any depiction of genitalia, breasts and buttocks (essentially, all the fun bits) in art. Pope Paul IV turned the church away from its more sinful, penis-filled past by adding marble and plaster fig leaves to groins of the statues within the Vatican, permanently damaging many statues.

You'd think a man dressed as the head of a penis would be a little more open.

Pope Innocent continued Paul's work in the 1600s, but for reasons unknown (we suspect it was his "thing"), he added metal fig leaves instead of marble leaves to the statues. Whatever the case, within a few generations of dick Popes, statues across Europe lost their manhood.

Of course, this doesn't explain why they're all missing their members. The Bacchus statue by Michelangelo may have been mutilated purely to make it look more antique. It seems that no matter where you look, history is rife with a strong hate towards anything penisy.

Gary Simmons's Chalk Art Meets a Predictable End

Gary Simmons is a renowned artist with an interesting style. Instead of using paint, he smudges chalk, but boy does he know how to use chalk.

Source.

So What Happened?

While we admit that applying chalk to a chalkboard isn't the best idea if you're planning on preserving the piece, surely you know, just by looking at it, that all those smudges didn't just happen accidentally. You know that the owner of one of these pieces, Russell Simmons (no relation), wasn't using the chalkboards for work. He's rich, so he probably has a pen and paper for that kind of stuff. Too bad one of his friends, a Victoria's Secret model, happened across it.

Bite us, rich people.

Usually when there's a Victoria's Secret girl hanging out at your party, you know there's going to be fun times, or at least a lot of vomiting going on. On the other hand, you usually wouldn't have $100,000 chalk drawings just lying around. Figuring the smudges were accidental, she decided to go right ahead and fix it with a damp cloth the same way a child may try to fix his dad's car by painting racing stripes on it. Which is as sweet as it is stupid.

Again, this is what a Simmons piece looks like:

And, here's what it presumably looks like now:

Regardless of whether you like it or not, it's hard to see how anyone can see the original drawing as anything but art. It's any wonder Russell's other paintings, including a Warhol piece, survived the onslaught of "fixing."

The Temple Of Artemis is Burned by a Fame Whore

Built around 550 BC after taking approximately 120 years to complete, and recognized as one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, the Temple of Artemis was an archeological and artistic achievement of the ages. But then, the temple succumbed to the traits of mankind; passion, desire and fame burned stronger than any fire and brought the temple to the ground. Also, a real fire happened.

Uh, does anyone else smell smoke? Guys?

So What Happened?

A young man named Herostratus just decided to burn the whole thing down. Realizing one day that fame was totally for him, and without reality TV there to dash his dreams on a national scale, he decided to do the next best thing: He burned down one of the greatest temples of the era in an effort to gain everlasting notoriety.

True purists burn things for the sheer joy of setting shit on fire.

The people of Ephesus, being the kind of people who knew what it was like to be young and reckless, did the logical thing and let him off on a minor misdemeanor. No wait, they did that other thing: They killed him and forbade anyone from ever mentioning his name again.

Of course, an ancient historian eventually did mention his name and that's how we know it today. So, he got his fame. It was totally worth it, right? All that art lost so Herostratus could have his two paragraphs and a couple of dot points worth of Wikipedia fame. Seriously, the youths of the ancient world were in some serious need of YouTube.

If only they'd had the Internet to pacify them.

Ancient Bison Art Gets Mistaken for Graffiti

The older a piece of art is, the more valuable it becomes. That's why ancient figurines of people boning each other are worth a fortune today and why our own pictures of people boning each other today will be invaluable in the future.

One day depictions of cow tipping will be priceless.

The ancient Pech-Merle cave drawings in Montauban, France go back further than any historic civilization, and they provide a wealth of information about the lives of prehistoric humans across Europe. The drawings were old, valuable, and probably even pretty. But that's hard to tell now considering...

So What Happened?

...Some damned teenagers got to them. Some damn, well-meaning teenagers and their youth group supervisors! Wait... what?

Yet another reason to hate kids.

It all started with a graffiti clean-up assignment, and to a degree, they were doing a good job of it. So good, they managed to remove graffiti that was thousands of years old. Presumably on their way to clean up that nasty mess inside the Louvre, they decided to hit the local caves to clean up graffiti put there by local teens. They were only halfway through until they noticed their mistakes.15,000 years of art removed because they couldn't tell the difference between ancient pictures of bison and crudely drawn dicks.

Is that a condom?

The official government response sums up the whole incident perfectly: "Absolutely stupid!" If there's one thing to learn from all this, it is that kids are bound to be trouble no matter what their intentions are.

Get off our goddamn Saint Augustine!
